How many presidents do you have? Think it’s just one, that pesky ol’ POTUS role? Hate to tell you you’re wrong but… get ready to welcome your latest and greatest SGA President: Dylan Schroeder. A powerful member of the SGA since 2018, Dylan gets ready to take over the Presidency this coming 2023-2024 term.
The Presidential seat in the SGA is what really fronts the operation of the Student Government. In the everlasting words of the SGA Constitution:
“The President is the spokesperson and representative of the SGA. The President is
responsible for the administration of student activities and SGA funds, for representing
the SGA in dealings with entities outside the SGA, and for upholding the Constitution of
the SGA.”

Now what that scary paragraph is attempting to communicate is that Dylan will be heading the SGA and influencing a lot of student extracurricular life. While he may not be able to get you a better dorm situation, he can put on the best 49ers the next batch of Freshman will ever see.

So since we’ve encharged this fellow student with so much power…Who even is he? Dylan is a Materials Engineering student who converted from the Mechanical Engineering Department. This means that he can relate to the two biggest populations on campus: Mechanical Engineer majors and people who dropped Mechanical Engineering.

Dylan is also very active in the food community of Socorro, running a food cart with his wife: The Wandering Scorpion. The Wandering Scorpion serves hearty, soul-warming Montana-inspired meals that have fed many Techies since it was established in 2022. Haven’t tried them yet? Check out NMT’s next event to get your mac-n-cheese and turkey melt fix. (Seriously, they are TOO good, this isn’t even an ad).

Dylan has also spent most of his NMT years working for the SGA in a variety of positions, “I’ve been the Ad chair under the SAB (Student Activities Board), the SAB, and the secretary under the Vice President.” He originally pursued the SGA as a way to make a little money but “quickly found how much work that needed to be done and…started getting more experience and understanding more things. [My interest in the SGA] just kind of blew up from there.”
A short interview with Dylan quickly prompted just how passionate he is about what the SGA can do and how it can best serve its students, “I just really want the students to know that I’m here for them, like just for them.” He is looking to focus on the Opportunity Scholarship for students, ensuring that legislative and all the higher ups recognize how important that scholarship has been for many. Dylan wants to expand and boost student activities and the SAC, looking to give new light to where students can engage in fun events hosted by the SGA.

Dylan will be serving his Presidency term next academic year. He’s looking to connect to students and really focus on their needs, especially in terms of student life and things to do in Socorro. Be on the lookout next semester for positive changes and a President that wants to hear your input.
